A Travellerspoint blog

And now, Day 2

But before I begin Day 2, I want to mention the two guides I had yesterday. Ryan from Waco, TX led the free tour. He was quite good although maybe a bit verbose. Leah led the tunnel tour and she was exceptional! There were a few children on the tour and she very capably kept them interested by involving them in the information either by asking them easy questions or by having them hold a sign or man the computer. Ok, now day 2. I headed over to the Mechane Yehuda market. Being Friday morning I expected it to be crazy busy but it was fairly low key. I am comparing this to markets I have been to around the world where it can be frenetic. It is a Jewish market in an area with a very diverse Jewish population. Every sect of Judaism was well represented. From the market I walked to the Old City via Jaffa St which not surprisingly takes you right to the Jaffa Gate. Today there were mounted police patrols. I guess they can get to any issues faster that way. I went to the Tower of David Museum which is just inside the gate. This is an amazing museum covering what is known as the very earliest stage of the city all the way to current time. I was there for almost 3 hours. It is also a beautiful "castle" complete with towers and moat. Exited the Old City through a tiny corner of the Christian Quarter and out the New Gate. Very quiet, lots of places closed for Christmas. On to Tel Aviv. After checking into the hotel I did the obligatory walk to the beach. The hotel is only a couple blocks off of it. I thought I would have a late lunch there but the restaurants I checked were either too expensive or too busy. There's a message there. Anyway, it is lovely but I am so not a beach person. Walked back up to Ben Yehuda St. And found a nice little Italian restaurant. Ordered a mixed vegetable bruschetta which turned out to be a very large plate of fabulous treats - mushrooms, red and yellow bell peppers, sun dried tomatoes, a grilled something that was delicious all drenched in olive oil! Oh, and also the bruschetta....so much for a light lunch. Currently back at the hotel and relaxing until meeting up with the tour group. FYI - Sorry if this blog is not super informative. I am doing it via my cell phone and one finger typing so I am being more brief.
